I have set up this website to record the life and times of my grandfather and great-grandfather, both named Arthur Barrow.  They were naval men, the first reaching the rank of Commander, living through the first part of the nineteenth century, caught up in Portuguese civil war, the Crimean War, the Ottoman-Egyptian War, the second Italian War of Independence, serving to combat the slave trade from West Africa, living through the time of change from wind to steam-powered ships, and in other perhaps more prosaic affairs.  The second, promoted to Full Admiral on the retired list, lived through the second part of the 19th Century and the first few years of the 20th, dying shortly after the outbreak of war in 1914.  He touched many parts of the Royal Navy as it progressed through its Victorian mastery of the seas.

To date the website for my great-grandfather is published here – there are likely to be additions and corrections; that for my grandfather is still to be produced.
